I was once was talking to my brothers over the phone about how my big brother and mom always like ugali (fufu), but my little brother and I just didn’t like it at all.
Then my husband went like: “Ugali is yummy depending on what you are having it with.” I was so shocked, and I said “Wait a minute, now how do you know that because that’s a typical African person answer. I know you haven’t had ugali more than six times since we have been together…” My brothers were also shocked as I was!
Today a couple of my husband’s close friends came to visit, and babe asked me to make ugali (I laughed and said you’re really married to an East African lady, because you used to call it fufu and now you’re calling it UGALI😁), beans, goat meet and spinach. I said sounds like a deal. He then said I will make ugali and you will take care of the sides.
Growing up one of my aunts liked cooking with Ghee oil. Ghee is a type of clarified butter that’s made from heating butter and allowing the liquid and milk portion to separate from the fat. The milk caramelizes and becomes a solid, and the remaining oil is ghee. I told my husband I will fry the beans in Ghee oil with some onions, garlic and tomatoes, I will make a goat stew using coconut milk, and I will make spinach with peanut powder (it’s one of my husband’s favorites, he always asks me to make it).
When I was introducing my husband to my culture and my food, I taught him how to eat ugali with his hands so today he said he will teach his friends how to do so😁.
I was so impressed seeing them eating ugali with their hands just fine. I must admit it’s a little challenging when you aren’t used to it but they did it like pros!
My boyfriend he is from Jordan, imagine now he can’t make more than 2 days without eating ugali 🤭🤭🤭, before he was using fork and knife but now he is using hand … and he really likes it more than me now….
