One of the coolest feelings that you can feel is hearing a song in a language you grew up speaking being played in a country where they do not speak that language.
I like having my husband driving us around downtown while we are drinking something like coffee or milkshakes, I call them ride dates 😂. One day we passed by a place that has an Italian name, Sorella Gelateria, and I jokingly told my husband, “It says galeteria – they probably make des galettes (waffles) and they might taste like the ones from Europe 😜.”
Weeks passed by, and we were back on one of our ride dates and passed by the gelateria shop, my husband then said it looks like an ice cream spot and I said let’s go check it out.
As soon as we got out of the car, I heard something familiar from the speakers. It was Francis Cabrel (a French singer) singing L’ancre De Tes Yeux and I was jumping with excitement and singing along with it.
People that were sitting outside were looking at me puzzled 😂. The reason why I am a fan of Francis Cabrel is because I grew up listening to my mom singing to his songs and she is the one who taught me how to sing L’ancre De Tes Yeux.
When got inside and ordered our ice cream, they had a flavor called pavlova, and oh my goodness it tastes amazing! It reminded me of an ice cream flavor I used to have when I was little. My mom would buy it for me after school, from an ice cream shop called Aux Délices, anyone from Bujumbura probably knows that place.
We sat outside eating our ice cream while I was singing along to all the songs that were playing. It was a little bit of everything, they would play some Francis Cabrel, Lara Fabien, Lâam, Rock Voisine, Jean Jacques Goldman. I so loved Jean Jacques’s last name and would say that I would name my son Goldman, I would translate it in French and would sound so romantic and cute, l’homme en or 😉.
I don’t know if I have ever enjoyed ice cream like I did when I had my scoop of tiramisu, pavlova, and banana pudding gelato while listening to French songs. Une régale je vous assure 😉.
