My Crown

When I started growing my hair, I kept it natural for a while then I relaxed it. I moved to the US with my hair relaxed. I started at job three months after I have been in the country and a work mate said something like “Black women relax their hair because they don’t like their kinky hair…” I looked straight in that person’s eyes and said “I don’t know how many black women you know or how many of them told you they don’t like their natural hair but let me break the news to you sweetheart, WE DO LOVE OUR NATURAL KINKY HAIR…”

When I got off work that day, I went for a pair of scissors ✂️ and cut all the relaxed hair off my head. The next morning, I went to a barbershop and had my head shaved. The inner me was thinking “now let me show whoever thinks black women don’t like their natural kinky hair that WE DO LOVE OUR HAIR.” I decided to go back to my natural hair and started growing it. I would then and still to this day wear my natural hair with so much pride. I call it MY PRICELESS CROWN 👸🏾.

When I started dating my husband, one of the things I told him about was my natural hair. I remember telling him “I have natural hair and I will not relax it for anything, if it causes you an issue then I am afraid I am not going to be a good match for you…” He then looked at me and said “What are you talking about? I LOVE YOUR NATURAL HAIR.”

One day I was coming from work heading to his place and I found him watching different YouTube tutorials on how to wash, dry and twist kinky hair (one of the things he did and won my heart 🥰🥰, didn’t show it to him so I kept it together 😜😂). He jumped in with helping with taking off my braids, washing my hair, twisting it and blow drying it.

I have been with my husband for almost four years now and he is always excited when it comes to take my braids off or wash my hair. He does it with so much joy and always asks me if there is something I would like him to learn so that he can do it.

A couple years ago he saw me doing my mom’s crochets, I didn’t know he was paying attention but when we got back to the US, he did a part of my crochet hair and I just couldn’t believe it!

He said he wants to learn how to do the braids box, he has been watching videos on YouTube so we are doing braids box next. I will keep y’all posted 😉.
